Bushwick Song Of The Week: Outsider by Mike Votava | inspired by S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders
For a variety of reasons I didn’t much care much for S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. The sentences were pretty bland (I’m a words guy) and the story was overly dramatic. But like any good Bushwick artist, I stuck with the dumb book to the stupid end, only with one slight tweak. While reading I imagined the Greasers and the Socs as members of rival boy bands, fighting for girls’ hearts while doing whatever it took to get to the top of the charts (now that’s a book!). This was not hard to do, especially since as a kid I had been witness to the movie version of The Outsiders which was jam packed with all my favorite 1980s Tiger Beat Heart Throbs including C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Tom Cruise and The Swayze (R.I.P.). My inspiration for this song came from that boy band premise. So I threw in a few lyrical references to the book and did my best to make a boy bandy-esque song that would make all the teenage girls squeal. And squeal they did (or at least they did in my head).

OUTSIDER by Mike Votava
inspired by S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders
I’m an outsider
outside your heart
please let me in so the lovin can start
I’m an outsider
not like the rest
baby get ready for the Ponyboy express
Oh girl, I know you’re not the greaser type
I’ve seen you running with those social guys
my hair is slicked way back
and I come from the wrong side of the tracks
Sweet baby, you know I’m tuff
but I’m not too tuff for your love
I’ll do whatever I need to do
oh baby girl, I’ll win this rumble for you
please believe it was self-defense
we didn’t mean to kill your boyfriend
I’ll rescue you from the flaming wreck
so you will be mine in the end
Stay golden, ponyboy
stay golden
you and me
were meant to be
I want to see
you’re Johnny Cakes
